Dormouse autumn surveys
Date: 21.11.2011
Type: Biodiversity
It’s that time of year again, the leaves are falling, the temperature’s dropping and the dormice surveys are being done. This sleepy male dormouse was found in woodland near Clocaenog this autumn. He is one of several dormice making good use of the nest boxes put up as part of the North Wales Dormouse Project.
These surveys help us know how well the dormouse population is doing from one year to the next. Dormice are very rare, and we’re extremely lucky to have them in Denbighshire, so it’s important that we keep a close eye on them. In the autumn, dormice will spend most of their time fattening up on hazelnuts and getting ready for winter hibernation. The next surveys will be carried out in spring time after the mice wake up from their winter sleep.
