Seal Seen in Rhuddlan!

Date: 16.01.2013

Type: Biodiversity

A common seal has been spotted in the River Clwyd at Rhuddlan in Denbighshire. The animal, probably a juvenile, had swum around two miles upstream from the mouth of the river in Rhyl.

Denbighshire County Councillor for Rhuddlan, Cllr Ann Davies, spotted the animal during a site visit to inspect the river bridge after the recent flooding. She said that “having lived in Rhuddlan for 50 years, I’ve never seen a seal in the river before. It was playing around in the river, and not disturbed by us being there at all. He almost looked pleased to see us!”

Cllr Davies and council bridge engineer James Hall managed to capture video footage of the seal.

Seals are marine creatures so it is unusual for them to be seen inland. They tend to be found in coastal waters where they feed on fish. There have been a number of other reports of seals venturing inland around the country in recent weeks following flooding.
